The THE World University Rankings, now in its 15th year, focus on a selected frame of the world’s research intensive universities, rather than the total global ‘pool’ of over 20,000 Higher Education Institutions. 13 indicators are used to measure the performance in teaching, research output and impact, knowledge transfer, and international outlook. In one particular area, citations, used as an indicator of research impact and influence, the UoC continues to punch above its weight – ranking #143 worldwide.
In the 2019 THE World University Rankings by Subject the
University ranked #151–175 for Pre-clinical, Clinical & Health,
#251–300 for Life Sciences, #301-400 for Computer Science,#301-400 for Engineering and Technology, #401+ for Psychology & #501–600 for Physical Sciences.
Reflecting in particular its research strengths, University of Crete is ranked =62 in the 2018 THE Young University Rankings. This is the seventh annual ranking of universities under 50 years old, and the seventh time University of Crete has been included in the top 100 of the world’s best young universities.
Ranked =51, the University is also in the top 100 of the 2019 THE Emerging Economies University Rankings.In terms of research influence,asmeasured by citations, University of Crete is in a leading position at #6 among the 442 universities included in the 2019 ranking.
In the US News 2019 Best Global Universities ranking of research-intensive universities powered by Clarivate Analytics, the University is ranked #452 worldwide, #204 in Europe and #4 in Greece. In terms of research impact, as indicated by ‘Normalized Citations’, the University ranks #107 worldwide. It is also notable, given the significance of international collaborative papers as a marker of quality, that the UoC ranks #67 worldwide on this performance indicator.
The CWTS Leiden Ranking 2019 includes University of Crete among the 963 Universities from 56 countries worldwide that have produced over 1000 Web of Science corepublications in the period 2014-2017 (using fractional counting). According to the 2019 results, at 9.6% the University of Crete has the highest percentage of high impact publications (PP top 10%) of the seven Greek HEIs included and, overall, ranks #197 on this research indicator among the total 346 European Universities listed.
Nature Index also shows the University among the leading research producing organizations, at #212 by article count among the 1888 European organizations & institutions listed with publications in the prestigious Nature journals for the year up to 30 November 2018.
The University of Crete is among the 1011 Higher Education Institutions listed in the 2019 QS World University Rankings, ranked together with the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens at 651-700 worldwide & joint third among the 6 Greek HEIs included. In theQS World University Rankings by Subject 2019the University is listed 301-350 worldwide for Medicine, 351-400 worldwide in Materials Science, 401-450 for Physics & Astronomy and 501-550 in Chemistry
The University has taken part in the new U-MULTIRANK university ranking, which compares and grades HEI performance across five broad dimensions (teaching and learning, regional engagement, knowledge transfer, international orientation and research). To date sixteen (16) of the nineteen (19) Greek HEIs listed participate in this multidimensional ranking. The Ready Made Rankings tool again shows that the University’s primary strengths are in research and research linkages.
