Philosophy and social studies are among the first subjects taught at the University; from 1977-83 through the School of Philosophy, and subsequently through an independent department. The Department now has modern, well-equipped facilities located at the University’s Gallos Campus in Rethymnon.

The Department is organized in two Divisions corresponding to the major areas of study: Philosophy, and Theory and Methodology of Social Sciences. Undergraduates are given a solid grounding in the disciplines through a curriculum which combines philosophy with psychology, sociology, cultural anthropology and education in order to shed light on some of the most fundamental questions in the study of human nature and society.  Specialization starts with the students' fifth semester, when they choose the Division in which they will complete their studies.  Students who wish to pursue a teaching career in Secondary Education are also offered practical teacher training.

Research and research training is organized through the Divisions and associated research units, ranging from philosophical translation through to bioethics, and is strongly interdisciplinary in character.
